UMass works to promote bicycling as a healthy, environmentally friendly way of getting around campus and the surrounding towns. These efforts are an important part of the University's program to reduce our dependence on single occupancy vehicle commuting, and in turn, reduce environmental impact. UMass and Amherst are well suited to bicycling, and more people are using their bikes every day for commuting, shopping, and general transportation.
If you live within a few miles of campus, bicycling is often the quickest and most efficient mode of travel. Bicyclists are commuting longer and longer distances. While bicycling typically takes longer than driving, you will see a drastic reduction in gas use and wear-and-tear on your car.
It's often difficult to change your routine. But you don't have to commit to bicycling every day - even a couple days a week is a commendable effort.
There is a bike registration program available at UMPD, contact 545-2121. Bike racks are provided through out campus. Please make every effort to secure your bike to these racks. Bike secured to any object other than a bike rack may be subject to removal at the owners expense. For bike rack locations please view our interactive map below.
